Endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue migrates outside of the uterus into the ovaries, vagina, bowel, bladder, rectum, and diaphragm. The condition is one of the leading causes of infertility in women and is further aggravated by stress and anxiety. Endometriosis is either inherited or caused by a faulty immune system.

Here are 5 effective yoga asanas to treat endometriosis.

Baddha Konasana – Butterfly Pose
Badhakonasana is also popularly known as the Butterfly Pose because of the movement of the legs during the posture, giving the appearance of a butterfly flapping its wings. Targeting primarily the legs, it is the perfect antidote to relax and stretch the muscles of the legs. This yoga pose will relax your body, mind and soul that will comfort your tired feet.

Supta Baddha Konasana – Reclined Bound Angle Pose
Reclined Bound Angle Pose, also known as Reclined Cobbler’s Pose, is a deeply relaxing yoga position that is recommended for students of all levels. This pose instills a sense of deep relaxation. It is not only a restorative posture but also a hip opening asana. It is a basic pose, which just about anyone can try their hand at. This asana is also called the Reclined Cobbler’s Pose or the Reclined Goddess Pose.

Sarvangasana – Shoulder Stand
arvangasana or shoulder stand is a yoga pose wherein the whole body is balanced on the shoulders. Sarvangasana influences the functioning of all parts of your body. This asana is highly beneficial in maintaining the mental and physical health and is also referred as ‘Queen of asanas’. In addition to stimulating the thyroid gland, this pose also relieves stress and depression, improves digestion, opens the shoulders and neck, and strengthens your legs, butt, arms, and abs.

Upavistha Konasana – Wide Angle Seated Forward Bend
Upavistha konasana is a seated forward bend that requires flexibility. The term comes from the Sanskrit upavistha, meaning ‘seated’ or ‘sitting,’ kona, meaning ‘angle,’ and asana, meaning ‘pose’ or ‘posture.’ From a seated position, the legs are spread wide and the upper body folds forward. Upavistha Konasana is good preparation for most of the seated forward bends, twists, and the wide-leg standing poses.

Bhujangasana – Cobra Pose
The name comes from the Sanskrit words bhujanga meaning “snake” or “serpent” and asana meaning “posture” or “seat”. From a prone position with palms and legs on the floor, the chest is lifted. Bhujangasana may strengthen the spine, stretch the chest, shoulders, and abdomen, firm the buttocks, and relieve stress and fatigue. Traditional texts say that Bhujangasana increases body heat, destroys disease, and awakens kundalini.

  2. Wow, I’ve just been reading all the comments and feel so sad that there are so many of us feeling confused on how to feel and get better with endometriosis pain and symptoms.
Please take time to do research about managing endometriosis- there is a lot of great information and healing protocols out there now for this. Unfortunately our mainstream medicine doesn’t have a clue when it comes to women’s health issues like this, so we have to take responsibility over our own health as best we can. Please don’t just have surgery because they recommend it when it may not be the only solution or even totally necessary. I have heard awful stories of young women having hysterectomies who really could have avoided it. Our bodies have an innate capacity to heal. There is a powerful healing process that our bodies have going on all the time. But in some ways this gets blocked and so the problem persists.
Nutrition (eating trigger foods or inflammatory foods) can cause irritation and block the healing process, stress and anxiety, negative emotions such as fear etc. These all need to be looked at and brought back into balance for the body to go back into its natural balanced state. Once the body is fully in balance- then it can engage the healing process.
I would 100% say these yoga asanas alone will not heal endometriosis! And I have worked in gynaecology surgery for almost 20 years and am now a health and well-being coach.
Please don’t take these things as fact- try them, see if they work for you – if they do, great. But just know that healing from endometriosis is a multi-faceted approach. Nutrition is the biggest factor in getting better with endometriosis. Search on instagram for health specialists working with endometriosis. For example Maisie Hill, author of Period power- has a great podcast all about self management of gynae/ period health issues. Dr Drummond has a lot of great info via her Instagram and author of ‘Outsmart endometriosis’. Also check out endo.fertility.dietician on Insta. There is also an amazing charity helping women with endo called Endometriosis Foundation another is endometriosis Uk is another.
I’d be happy to chat with anyone who feels they need more support – dm me @lisafearoncoaching on Insta. Sending love & light to you all. We all have the power and potential within us to heal- we just need to give our body the right nurturing to support the healing process 💗
